Makiki is a community that generally stretches east to west from Punahou Street to Pensacola Street and north to south from Round Top Drive/Makiki Heights Drive to Lunalilo Freeway. Punchbowl Crater, home to the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific, and Tantalus, tower over the Makiki neighborhood. Makiki is primarily made up of older houses, smaller apartment buildings, and side streets. The major roadways include Punahou, Pensacola, Piʻikoi, Nehoa Street, and Wilder Avenue. The area also includes a public infrastructure, including a fire station, The Queen's Medical Center, a public school system, private schools including Punahou School, several churches of various denominations, the Makiki Public Library, a community center, marketplace, and various parks. There are hiking trails owned by the state for public use. The Mauka areas are mostly underdeveloped.
