Kaimuki is a quaint neighborhood boarded by Waialae Avenue, Luawai Street, Alohea Avenue and 6th Avenue. With coffee shops, old-school diners, and quirky indie stores on Waialae Avenue, there are also shops selling vintage Aloha shirts, bento boxes and artisan gelato, alongside trendy jewelry boutiques and hip brunch spots. Busy stalls at the KCC Saturday Farmers’ Market are full of bright tropical flowers, locally harvested sea salt, sea asparagus, and kimchi fried rice. Oldtimers will remember Kaimuki Theater, Hong Kung Restaurant, and Kaimuki Bowl. Some of the longtime businesses still going are Jose's Mexican Restaurant, The Kaimuki Crack Seed Store, and The Pill Box Pharmacy.
I grew up in Kaimuki, spending the first 47 years there, attending Liholiho Elementary School, Kaimuki Intermediate (now Kaimuki Middle) School, and Kaimuki High School.
